Founded in 1952, it has over 52,000 members who are committed to improving patient care, developing their own skills, and promoting general practice as a discipline. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

The Royal College of General Practitioners launched a new journal BJGP Open in January 2017. The Senior Assistant Editor is responsible for the day-to-day editing, production, promotion, and development of BJGP Open.

The Senior Assistant Editor has a leading role in editing and proofreading high-quality peer-reviewed research and other content. Using an XML-first workflow they will be responsible for creating and editing content on the journal site, ensuring that new content is quality controlled before go-live.

They will have excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to rewrite content by authors whose first language is not English.
