Our client is a rapidly growing technology business, bringing together a wide range of disciplines including X-ray physics, engineering, statistics and software development.

They are looking for an experienced Experimental Officer to join the team, the ideal candidate will enjoy working in a stimulating and friendly place where everyone takes pride in their jobs and are excited by the innovative and creative work they do!

As the Experimental Officer you will manage an effective laboratory service to support technical and commercial development activities, be educated to at least HND-level or higher in an instrumentation, engineering or similar applied technical subject with several years experience in a senior technical role.

Relevant experience with X-ray imaging equipment would be a significant advantage. The role requires an energetic individual capable of “getting things done” with minimal day-to-day management. The successful candidate will be expected to show high levels of commitment and responsibility in their job.

The Role:

- Liaison with Applications and Scientific staff to ensure that the laboratory maintains the appropriate capability to meet the needs of the business.
- Ensuring that lab equipment is functional, safe and is used in accordance with procedures in the Quality Management System (QMS), including developing and implementing improved safety procedures as required, overseeing equipment checks and administrative procedures in line with the QMS, troubleshooting problems with lab equipment and fixing them, or arranging for them to be fixed, as appropriate.
- Carrying out the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, following appropriate training
- Laboratory work planning, management and reporting
- Ensuring that laboratory space is kept clean, tidy and organised and presents a professional image to customers and other visitors at all times.
- Design and construction of experimental apparatus including: mechanical support structures, computer controlled stages and instrumentation, electrical and electronic circuit design including interlocks and trigger circuits.
- Experimental design, planning and execution to meet Applications and Scientific Staff requirements.
- Management and mentoring of laboratory technicians.
- Data analysis and reporting of results.
- Clear communication with lab colleagues and scientific and engineering staff.

- High levels of practical ability in mechanical construction, instrumentation, electromechanical devices and basic electronics
- Strong organisational and task/people management skills
- Attention to detail and a meticulous approach.
- Good problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Able to readily adapt to new tasks and changing priorities.
- High levels of motivation and a desire to continuously improve
- Good IT skills
- Constructive and supportive management style including mentoring and skill development in colleagues.

Education and skills:

- GCSE grade C or above in English, maths and at least one appropriate technical subject, or equivalent education or experience.
- HND equivalent or higher in Instrumentation, Engineering or similar technical subject, or equivalent experience.
- Practical experience in a senior technical role.
- Ability to manage/oversee lab staff and maintain good working relationships.
- Use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Additional skills and qualities which would be beneficial:

- Additional education/training/experience in a technical subject.
- Awareness of Continuous Improvement good practices.
- Experience of working under an ISO9001 regime.
- IT skills; familiarity with computer hardware
