If you're a world-class mechanical designer, my client, a world-class robotics research lab, have just the contract job for you! As a business unit, my Clients main objective is to create an internationally recognised centre of technical leadership for Remote Applications in Challenging Environments, delivering complex solutions, developing new technologies and supporting UK industry.

Due to the high volume of specialist projects, our Client is in the market for extra support from a capable Mechanical Design Engineer to execute project and operational responsibilities in collaboration with external partners and within allocated time scales as well as budget constraints.

The key aspects of your account abilities would be focused on SYSTEM ANALYSIS and DESIGN & REVIEW with Procure&Commission being a natural part of your role.

Initially a 12 months contract opportunity offering modern and high tech working environment, challenging and rewarding projects and an opportunity to contribute to a project from cradle to grave.

As a successful candidate you are either degree or HND/HNC qualified with relevant experience. You are able to do hand calculations and have a solid understanding of basics of engineering. The Client tends to be work on projects "from scratch" or "blank sheet" so ability to apply theory with confidence is essential.

System analysis

* Remote compatibility & design assessments
o Envisaging arrays of alternative techniques to complete these required tasks.
o Evaluating the feasibility of each technique in quantifiable ways.
o Assessing these techniques against given criteria such as reliability, structural integrity etc performing analysis and researching and estimating appropriate data for areas where data and interface information does not exist.
* Requirements capture
o Methodically capturing and reviewing system requirements
* Market & technology surveys
o Researching and assessing current and nascent technologies and assessing their applicability and suitability against the requirements

Design & Review

* Writing functional specifications
o Clearly and unambiguously define design work, based on requirements and technology selection, through functional specifications
* Concept generation
o Developing and evaluating alternative mechanisms to deliver the required function.
* Concept selection
o Using systematic selection techniques generate information and recommendation to allow responsible panel to make informed decisions
* Preliminary design and component selection
o Developing outline concept into an engineered solution, with all key elements and interfaces defined
o Researching and designating the appropriate components, e.g. Actuators, guides and bearings, gears, structural elements, sensors, power chains.
* Structural, thermal , kinematic, fluid flow & vibrational analysis'
o Using a variety of hand calculations and computational techniques to predict performance and direct design using stated loads and assumptions.
* Integration
o Identifying and managing appropriate technical support from interfaces experts, (e.g EC&I, H&S)
* Peer review
o Actively seek out support from other engineers.
o To prepare documentation for design review.
* Detailed design & drafting
o Working with the assigned draughtsmen in creating the final models, ensuring critical design features and intent are translated
o Managing the production of detailed drawings, ensuring appropriate tolerances, manufacturing techniques and assembly are considered.
o Managing the process through the technical control system, identifying and liaising with appropriate interfaces.

Procure & Commission

* Co-ordinating the procurement of diverse subassemblies and bespoke & commercially available components ensuring value for money and budget compliance.
* Developing & writing assembly procedures
* Developing & writing testing and commissioning procedures.
* Identifying key quality requirements and creating corresponding inspection documentation in line with RACE standards
* Monitoring progress and quality of both sub-contract and in-house manufacturing & assembly ensuring compliance to UKAEA site standards
* Identifying manufacturing non-conformances and discuss them with the associated stakeholders.
* Arranging or enacting inspection by relevant departments.
* Commissioning & trouble-shooting hardware builds
* Signing off completed work packages
* Writing maintenance and operator manuals
