Benefits Advisor 

Arun District Council is home to award winning beaches and parks, historical monuments, picture postcard villages and part of the South Downs, they`ve got it all. Covering the three main towns of Arundel, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, the district is home to around 150,000 people and borders Chichester to the west and Worthing to the east. 

Position: Benefit Assessor 
Location: Arun Civic Centre 
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent 
Hours: 37 hours per week 
Salary: £16,781 - £22,658 per annum

About the role: 

The Benefits Advisor role will involve working as part of a team assessing and managing claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction. You will be required to handle confidential information and delicate situations, so you must be empathetic when dealing with customers. 


- Assess new and repeat claims for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction 
- Maintain and amend existing claims for Housing and Council Tax Reduction 
- Communicate with other Departments, Organisations and customers about benefit matters 
- Process information and maintain computer and manual information systems related to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction 
- Assess entitlement to Benefit in accordance with the Benefit Regulations, procedure notes and best practice. 
- Ensure that customers are notified promptly of their entitlement to benefit 
- Ensure that overpayments of benefit are actioned promptly and recovery action taken in accordance with the Benefit Regulations, procedure notes and best practice 
- Advise customers as to their possible eligibility for Benefit, with a view to maximising Benefit take up 
- Liaison with other Departments and Organisations to ensure Service Level Agreements are adhered to 
- Communicate with customers via the telephone, personal call or letter 
- Attend training courses, events and workshops as appropriate to the job role 

About you: 

To be successful within the Benefits Advisor role, you'll need to have a desire to learn, the ability to adapt to change, lots of empathy and the determination to go the extra mile for their customers every day. Resolving complex problems won't faze you, and you'll be able to build a good understanding of the service to ensure claims are processed, all the while acting within operational processes and procedures. 

You will have excellent phone manner with ability to listen actively and work under pressure accompanied with good written communication skills. If you understand the benefits system it would be an advantage but a good attitude, a desire to learn and a positive outlook are more important. 

You may have experience of the following: Benefits Advisor, Customer Service, Welfare Benefits, Money Management, Financial Support, Income Advisor, Benefits Adviser, Housing Officer, State Benefits System, Finance and Welfare Advisor, Ferret Information Systems, Benefits Assessor etc.
