Job Title: Production Engineer

Job Purpose
The Production Engineer’s primary role will be to support the production and manufacture of mechanical/electrical components, assemblies and test for both internally and externally manufactured product.
This job description does not form part of your contract of employment.

Key Accountabilities
• Liaise with Design and Supply Chain supporting and driving “Design for Manufacture”. This may require travel with overnight stays in supporting supplier development.
• Supplier liaison/management (Managing supplier interface, technical reviews, manufacturing/design feedback into design reviews).
• Project management – input and leading projects within Production Engineering, Design/Development and Supply Chain, compiling and managing project plans (Microsoft Project).
• Represent Engineering in meetings and site tours with customers and other external bodies as and when required.
• Preparation of manufacturing cost estimates for use by Sales Department for Customer quotations.
• Liaise with Team Leaders, Production Control and Operations Manager to agree production requirements to achieve customer deliveries.
• Assisting sales and purchasing where necessary by liaising with customers, sub-contractors (at their premises if required).
• Lean manufacturing & design for manufacture, provision of production engineering input to product development and prototype build where required.
• Setting up and structure for cost effective and efficient manufacturing routes, including the preparation of Master Parts, Bill of Materials, Manufacturing Paths, input and maintenance of these onto the Company’s ERP system.
• Preparation of component and assembly plans including process sheets, detailed work instructions, quality monitoring and control procedures to produce product at lowest cost. To be undertaken in compliance with customer/company specifications and quality controls to ensure the technical excellence of all finished parts.
• Investigate and solve manufacturing/assembly/test problems by liaison and close co-operation with production personnel and sub-contractors where necessary.
• Specify jig and fixture requirements, including maintenance of current tooling inventory.
• Identify and implement productivity improvements.
• Trouble shoot production issues, implement process improvements.
• Manage projects into production within assembly/test manufacturing environment.
• Creation of training plans for shop floor personnel.
Comply and adhere to company procedures in accordance with AS9100 accreditation.
• Development and implementation of projects in close liaison with shop floor supervision. For example:
• Set-up reduction programme
• Alternative cost reduction methods/tooling.
• Organisation of the workplace - tooling, fixtures and gauges etc.
• Review procedures.
• Lead-time reduction.
• Batch size optimisation.
• Production/quality planning.

• Training/Supervision Responsibility:
• To act as a facilitator in process improvement reviews.
• Carry out training for new machine or process introduction.
• Carry out in-house training on assembly/testing techniques.
• Any other reasonable duties within the skills and experience capabilities of the jobholder.

Key Relationships

Shop Floor manufacturing personnel & Supervisors, Design, Procurement, Quality & Production Control.

Suppliers and on occasions customers.

Personal Profile
The candidate should be capable of multitasking, numerate, literate, hard working, organised and possess a pleasant inter-personnel manner with a methodical approach to their work. They should be able to work on their own initiative or as part of a team.


• Minimum 10 years practical experience in a manufacturing environment, with a minimum of 5 years within Production Engineering.
• Project management.
• Solid modelling experience (preferably Solidworks).
• Computer literate, with some exposure to an ERP system.
• Engineering qualification.
• Knowledge of precision machining, inspection, assembly and test in complex electro-mechanical systems.
• Full Driving licence.

• CAM programming experience (Ideally with CNC operation experience).
• Electro-Mechanical assembly.

• Attention to detail essential with good IT skills.
• Ability to work to deadlines, multitasking and prioritise workload appropriately.
• Methodical approach to their work.

• A level or higher standard of education.
• Minimum HNC in an Engineering Discipline.
