Our Recycling Technology based client is seeking an ambitious and research oriented Research Chemists / Chemical Engineers for the development of hot gas filtration system for a novel plastic waste depolymerisation technology. The recruited Research Chemists / Chemical Engineers will contribute towards developing an advanced version of the company's patented machine by making it more resilient in processing plastic waste contamination. The position will be in the company office in Swindon, UK and an annual salary of €55,000 will be awarded.

The role will be initially Fixed term for 12 months potentially leading to a permanent position, if successful.

The position will be made possible through the support of the SME Innovation Associate programme (INNOSUP-02-2016) under which a fellowship will cover 12 months of a postdoctoral contract (01/09/2017 - 31/08/2018), relocation and training costs.

The role of the Research Chemists / Chemical Engineers will include:

• Research, design and trial new filtration systems for the company’s chemical recycling process
• Through lab scale trials establish the efficiency and scalability of proprietary hot gas filtration techniques / scrubbing agents for process and use the results of these to enable new design possibilities.
• Select and design the most appropriate techniques that might include using process simulators (eg ASPEN), 3D CAD and Fluid Dynamics software in collaboration with the R&D team.
• Recommend suitable filtration technologies / scrubbing agents based on experimental data and develop a simulation model that can be used as a tool for both further research and operation set up of commercial plants
• Develop an initial Industrial Research Plan for further investigation by the R&D team
• Work closely with Filtration Systems / Filtration Component suppliers & Equipment Fabricators to build a prototype
• Execute testing of the prototype

The ideal Research Chemists / Chemical Engineers should have:

• PhD in Chemical Engineering or other associated scientific subject
• Proven knowledge and experience in all steps of front-end process design, experimental planning
• Computer skills to take on simulation, design and fluid dynamics software
• Experience of safe operation of research projects involving high temperature processes and flammable materials
• Excellent English communication skills and ability to communicate with industry experts in English

Training and Development provided to the Research Chemists / Chemical Engineers:
• The recruited associate will participate in core training from the EU as well as specialised training arranged by the business in project management and simulation modelling

The research associate will work in a multidisciplinary team of scientists and business experts. You will be advised by and trained by leading scientists from the University of Surrey (Chemical Engineering) and Cranfield University (high temperature) processes]. If the project is successful, it is likely the recruited associate will be invited to carry on the research at an industrial scale as part of RT's core R&D team on a permanent basis.

About our client
Our client is an engineering company that has developed a patented plastic pyrolysis technology which can recycle end-of-life Mixed Plastic Waste into a valuable hydrocarbon which is a low sulphur hydrocarbon that can be used as a substitute for heavy fuel oil, or as a feedstock to make Wax and Naphtha. Our client’s technology, was conceptualised at the University of Warwick [UoW] in 2010. Their aim is to provide a low cost, environmentally beneficial and mass producible solution for all end-of-life plastic waste.

Our client has a R&D facility in Swindon, UK where the technology has now evolved into a Engineering Prototype. The plan now is to design and build a Production Prototype and carry out further research to reach commercialisation.
