Role Purpose (Summary)

The Infrastructure Architect will be responsible for defining infrastructure architecture roadmaps and standards, whilst maintaining solution integrity for designs generated internally or by external service providers, ensuring they are in accordance with industry best practise, whilst aligned to internal technical standards and long-term goals.

The Infrastructure Architect will also be responsible for guiding and defining the long term vision of the company’s infrastructure, assisting with planning and implementation of transformation activities.

General Description

  • Review, challenge, advise and /or collaborate with third party service providers to ensure that all IT designs are commercially viable, deliver appropriate business benefit and are achievable within customer timeframes

  • Proactively identify potential problem or high risk areas and participate in solution definition, particularly, but not limited to, issues of scalability, business and IT resiliency

  • Deliver project tasks to required standards to support successful portfolio delivery

  • Interface with the external service supplier on a regular basis to represent business interests and ensure any risks or conflicts are addressed prior to implementation

  • Evaluate and challenge technical proposals against standards to identify conflicts and protect the integrity of the IT estate

  • Communicate up-to-date solution status in a concise format, suitable for upwards reporting and escalation

  • Influence and co-ordinate new systems and /or technology development to ensure it is consistent and well integrated with existing systems

  • Work closely with the Enterprise Architecture and Solution Architecture teams to understand and promote adherence to the company’s IT strategy, Architecture Principles and Roadmaps

  • Collaborate with global infrastructure teams to identify synergies across the company and to support delivery of global initiatives

  • Develop infrastructure strategy, principles, policies and roadmaps for assigned areas to enable the successful delivery of the overall IT strategy

  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal business units and external service suppliers to ensure the detailed technology direction meets the wider business objectives

  • Conduct research on emerging technologies to support developments and recommend technologies to increase cost effectiveness and infrastructure flexibility

  • Maintain understanding of current and future technologies and their potential use within the infrastructure estate

  • Actively ensure retirement of legacy technology

  • Prioritise workload to balance conflicting activities to ensure that all given deadlines are achieved to a high standard

Essential Requirements

  • Experience of working with third party service suppliers or outsource providers

  • Experience of working with Service Level Agreements

  • Experience of effectively communicating to all levels throughout an organisation

  • Understanding of project lifecycle and methodologies

  • Ability to identify key areas of risk or complexity

  • Experience in ensuring systems conform to architectural principles (e.g. supportability, future-proofing, consolidation), standards and strategy

  • Experience of developing strategic plans

  • Experience of defining technical and architectural standards

  • Ability to influence decisions and negotiate solutions with suppliers and stakeholders in order to ensure the right results for the company

  • Commercial awareness

  • Analysis and evaluation skills

  • Contributing to functional and non-functional requirements for infrastructure systems

  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business need

  • Excellent technical architecture and documentation skills - both at a detailed and summary level

  • Ability to conduct research into emerging technologies, trends, standards and products

  • Background in designing infrastructure systems

  • Experience in designing and /or implementing the following technologies:

    • VMware vSphere

    • MS Windows Server

    • MS SQL

    • Storage infrastructure

    • Citrix XenApp

Advantageous

  • Experience of working in the Insurance or Financial Services industry

  • Experience of working in a multi-supplier environment

  • TOGAF9 Certification

  • Experience in designing and /or implementing the following technologies:

    • Networking and Security

    • AIX

    • i-Series

    • p-Series

    • Oracle
