UK Power Networks (UKPN) has the largest electricity distribution network covering London, the East of England and the South East supplying electricity to 8 million customers.
The rollout of Smart Metering into customer premises by 2020 requires the largest metering installation programme undertaken by the UK energy industry in a number of years. For UK Power Networks we anticipate at least 3% of the 7.6 million domestic and small non-domestic meters to be changed in our DNO Areas will require some form of electrical asset intervention at the customers’ premises.

To meet this demand for such interventions the Company is recruiting and training Smart Metering Interventions Operatives through a Trailblazer apprenticeship training programme.

The Company will provide all of the necessary training and competency requirements through its in-house training programme. The first 6 months of training is likely to be residential and successful applicants are likely to be required to stay in accommodation Monday through to Thursday night and then travelling back to your home location on Friday afternoons so you can be near to the Company’s Training Centre or external training provider’s site (if used) during the working week. Accommodation will be provided by the Company.

The vacancy is open to applications from both external candidates (including agency workers) and UK Power Networks permanent and fixed-term employees.

Job Purpose:
The Smart Metering Interventions Operative will, following successful completion of the in house 6 month tailored training programme, work with on the job supervision in customer premises. This will involve electricity cut out changes, other supply interventions and will also involve carrying out some excavation activities. Full training for all activities will be provided and formally assessed to ensure operational competency. Further in house training will take place during the first 18 months of employment.

Principal Accountabilities:
Smart Metering duties include: replacement and maintenance of electrical service assets on service cables up to and including 100 amp three-phase electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system, by means of carrying out limited jointing activities on LV cable networks initially under the supervision whilst undergoing training and developing competence. Some excavation duties will also be undertaken. Adherence to safety and distribution rules is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required:
Applicants from a variety of backgrounds are welcomed who have gained an electrical or mechanical engineering qualification and can demonstrate work experience gained in a craft or technical role, such as electricians, mechanical fitters, welders, vehicle technicians or telecommunications technicians or closely associated distribution network roles.
Applications from individuals who have acquired technical knowledge, skills, qualifications (at least BTEC level 2) and experience through an apprenticeship or another formal training programme related to one of the roles detailed above will also be welcomed.
Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate their ability to work in a team with good communication skills and demonstrate an understanding of customer service principles with a drive to go that extra mile to provide quality of work and service.
Applicants must be in possession of a full UK driving licence.
Applicants must possess a high degree of manual dexterity demonstrated through the use of hand tools and will be expected to undertake a range of practical assessment, aligned to their chosen craft and working to defined specifications.
Applicants must demonstrate an enthusiasm for and interest in electronics, electricity or engineering and an excellent awareness around the issues, importance and application of health and safety standards, and enthusiasm to work both outdoors and in customer’s properties.
The role includes supporting ground works activities and experience in street works would also be a benefit coupled with the acquisition of recognised qualifications
By the end of the training programme, you will need to have gained the full knowledge, skills and competence to work productively on the Network and be deemed a fully qualified Smart Metering Operative
The assessment of competence and application of knowledge and skills will be conducted throughout the duration of the Training Programme.
Applicants are asked to be aware that training may take place at UK Power Networks sites across the geographical footprint and will at times be residential so applicants will be required spend time away from home.
It is likely that some Saturday working will be required to attend Customer appointments.
Where required by the Company you will undertake operational standby duties in line with the SGNF Standby Agreement 2010. These standby duties are contractual for a minimum of five years.

Duties & Responsibilities of a Smart Metering Operative:
Ensure that a risk assessment is satisfactorily completed prior to the commencement of any work activity.
Ensure all others in the working party are briefed, understand the contents of the risk assessment, and have signed on to it.
Ensure that all sites are set up in accordance with NRSWA
Ensure work instructions are carried out to the required standards and in accordance with the Distribution Safety Rules and the Company Health Safety Standards and Policies
Ensure that all materials and components transported to site are done so in a safe and secure manner without damage
Ensure that the full co-operation and best customer relations are maintained on site
Ensure that all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including overalls, hard hats, gloves and boots at all appropriate times
Ensure accurate collection and recording of data in either electronic or hard copy format
Ensure that the jointing Supervisors instructions are complied with at all times
Check that all vehicles allocated are fully maintained and kept in a roadworthy condition and to report all faults and defects to the Transport Department in the appropriate manner
Ensure all working areas of the vehicles are kept clean and tidy
Ensure that all tools and plant allocated to the vehicle are properly maintained
Ensure use of correct fuel for the particular Company vehicle/item of plant
Ensure that all Company plant and equipment is used in a manner in line with manufacturers’ instructions and Company policies and procedures
Ensure security of Company information and property
Minimise Third Party claims (i.e. Public Liability and Customer Complaints.
Ensure that ALL accidents/incidents no matter how small or insignificant they may initially appear are reported to the Powercare Manager
Carry out other duties as requested to meet the needs of the Company and its business
Co-operate fully with Safety Audits
