Test Development Engineer 

Detectortesters is a designer and manufacturer of world leading testing technology for fire detection systems. 

Their product portfolio enables functional testing and maintenance of smoke, heat and CO detectors through a range of renowned brands including; Smoke Sabre, Solo, Testifire and Scorpion. 

Position: Test Development Engineer 
Location: Hatfield, Hertforshire 
Job Type: Full Time, Permanent 
Salary: £30,000 - £40,000 per annum depending upon experience 

About the role: 

The Test Development Engineer will design, develop and implement automatic test equipment and test programs for design verification and production testing. This will include the design of electronic circuits and writing test software to attain full test automation. The person will maintain, support and develop all production test procedures and equipment on site. 


- Specify, design, build, commission and support production test equipment with efficiency and cost in mind. 
- Create test design documentation including test instructions, specifications, drawings and verification plans. 
- Provide technical guidance to the production line including hands-on debugging of test systems. 
- Write and sustain test software. 
- Contribute to the company`s production engineering objectives with regards to new product introduction, process improvement and lean manufacturing through working closely with R&D, Production, Quality, and Engineering. 
- Liaise with sub-contractors to implement production testing and training of local support personnel. 

Essential Skills / Experience: 

- Degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Alternatively, the candidate would need to have a proven track record as a Test Development Engineer (circa 5 years). 
- Electronics engineering (including PCB design and assembly) experience with an electromechanical bias. 
- Experience of managing own time and assigned resources to meet timescales and quality objectives. 
- Hands-on approach to solving engineering problems. 

Desirable Skills / Experience: 

- Understanding of electromechanical production processes. 
- Experience in developing tests for automatic execution would be a plus. 
- Design and application experience of production test equipment (including jigs and fixtures) would be an advantage. 
- Experience of PCB design and assembly specifically for test fixtures would be a plus. 
- LabView and Altium Designer experience would be an advantage. 
- Experience of creating simple 2D mechanical drawings would be an advantage. 
- Experience of working with sub-contract manufacturers would be a plus. 
- Knowledge / experience of Just-In-Time and Lean Manufacturing, kaizen, and 5S would be an advantage.
