Our client has a rare opportunity for a resident, full-time Matron/Housekeeper (term-time only), to commence the Michaelmas term, end of August 2017, within a boy's boarding house.

This is a key non-teaching appointment and as such, carries a great deal of responsibility for the pastoral care of the pupils, therefore applicants are sought whom can maintain and enhance the school's reputation for providing outstanding care of young people. Previous experience in a caring/nursing profession is preferable.

The primary function of a Matron/Housekeeper is to provide high quality pastoral care for the pupils within the boarding House, working closely with and in support of the Housemistress. As the Housekeeper, the Matron's secondary function is to manage the domestic services in the House and oversee the Domestic staff, which includes cleaning and catering - House dining is an essential element of the boarding experience.

Main Duties

·The welfare and well-being of the pupils in your House. You are part of a team of resident adults, and relevant information should be shared accordingly; the pupils should be aware that you share appropriate information.
·The first treatment of any illness or injury. You should be conversant with and apply the School's Medical Centre Procedures. You must liaise closely with the School Medical Centre, seeking advice whenever necessary. You should keep full records of all pupils' medical problems and treatment given, including those that you refer on to the Medical Centre. You should keep the Housemaster informed, and liaise with him over the reporting of serious problems to the pupil's parents or guardians. You will transport pupils to hospitals and for dental, physiotherapy etc. appointments, as necessary.
·Be conversant with, support and apply the Personal Welfare policy and Complaints Procedure.
·Make it clear to pupils that you share information with other resident staff. Pupils may tell you about issues that they think are problems within the House, and they may find it easier to tell you rather than someone else. These cries for help must be shared, and addressed.
·Assistance with registration of Day Pupils each morning and lunch time [if required by the Housemaster].
·Pupil discipline, including their tidiness, appearance, dress and table manners, applying a mixture of firmness and skill to bring out the best in them. You must liaise closely with the Housemaster to ensure that rules are applied consistently and that you and he agree the tone of your handling issues with pupils. You should be conversant with, support and apply the School and House Rules, in particular the School Anti-bullying Statement, and the Drug and Substance Misuse Policy
·Dealing with parents where necessary, at all times in a professional and tactful manner, mindful of the best interests of the House and School, liaising with the Housemaster as appropriate.
·Being on-call in the House whenever the Housemaster is away.

1.Your main duties, as Housekeeper, include the following:

·The cleanliness of the House, both during term and at the beginning and end of each holiday period.
·The management of the cleaning and catering staff, with the support, advice and assistance of the Domestic Bursar. This includes the provision of appropriate training, including environmental health and health and safety.
·As vacancies arise, the recruiting of domestic staff with the support, advice and assistance of the Domestic Bursar and the HR Manager.
·Ordering and management of cleaning materials, with particular regard to COSHH regulations, and within the allocated budget.
·Management and control of catering[1].
·Maintenance of cleaning and laundry equipment, liaising with Domestic Bursar as necessary.
·Supervision of the laundry ensuring that the pupils' clothing and House linen is laundered effectively and economically, within the allocated budget.
·Ensuring that the general fabric of the building is in good order at all times, reporting defects to the Maintenance department in liaison with the Housemaster.
·Being responsible for handling petty cash, as directed by the Housemaster.
·Checking all invoices received, authorising them for payment and passing them to the Bursary.
·Helping to organise and execute House events e.g. House Suppers, Sixth Form dinners and Speech Day drinks.
·In an emergency, standing in for the House Chef.

2.All such other duties as the School may reasonably, from time to time communicate, either orally or in writing to you.

[1] The House Chef has primary responsibility for the catering operation but overseen by the Housekeeper. The existing House Handbook also includes the following within the Guidelines for Matrons, but they might be considered the responsibility of each House Chef:
Planning menus to ensure an appropriate and varied diet, within the allocated budget.
Ensuring that proper safety and hygiene procedures are followed in the kitchen and records kept up-to-date
