Senior Underwriter


Up to £40k (dependant on experience) + bonus / benefits

Our client is a fast growing specialist retail lending and savings group serving the UK and is authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA. They have built a strong reputation as a specialist lender offering a broad range of products to UK SME’s and consumers including Residential, Buy-To-Let/SME Mortgages and Personal Loans.

The key purpose of the Senior Underwriter role is to facilitate and progress mortgage applications, within the assigned mandate level, through to mortgage offer and in line with the Bank’s operating procedures and policies.

Core Responsibilities include:

  • Underwrite allocated applications to offer, within assigned mandate level and agreed service standards, requesting further information from relevant stakeholders where required and verifying this on receipt.

  • Offer mortgages to approved borrowers, within assigned mandate level and agreed service standards, requesting any outstanding information if required and verifying it on receipt.

  • Review Agreement in Principle requests in a timely manner ensuring that the information meets the requirements of the Bank’s Lending Policy and confirms decisions to the relevant intermediary.

  • Communicate with intermediaries by telephone and in writing, handle objections and provide objective feedback to any questions.

  • Work closely with our sales team to take consideration of time pressures and customer journey

  • Manage escalations and resole technical queries from other team members.

  • Support the management team with the implementation of policy

  • Contribute to underwriting team meetings giving the benefit of your experience

  • Respond to complaints within SLA’s seeking advice and guidance from Management where necessary. Assist less experienced member of staff in this regard.

  • Attend the other underwriting offices occasionally to assist with the group Target Operating Model

  • Identify any potential fraudulent activity and escalate any concerns to Management or the Compliance Department immediately. Assist less experienced members of the team in this regard.

  • Support the Lending Assessors and less experienced underwriters where required with technical queries.

  • Follow and keep up to date with current best practice and regulatory requirements and recommend improvements or changes to procedure.

  • Participate in any ad-hoc or strategic project work as and when required.

    Experience/Knowledge Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years previous experience as a mandated mortgage underwriter within a UK financial operation is essential.

  • Minimum of 2 years previous experience underwriting residential mortgages (portfolio lending, specialist buy to let, credit repair/sub prime, bridging and bespoke priced residential loans) is essential

  • 1 year previous experience of creating loan recommendation documents and delivering them to an Executive Committee or Leadership Team (desirable)

  • Intermediate level of knowledge of the FCA regulations regarding residential mortgages is essential

  • GSCE/GCE qualifications in both Maths and English are essential
