The Role:
The Lead Developer role is integral to setting the technical direction for the organisation and for nurturing and developing members of the development team. This is an exciting time to join us. We’ve recently brought our software development in house and are building a digital team. You’ll own the technical evolution of our digital products and help to grow our development team, designing and embedding cutting edge processes, standards and architecture. As our products mature, you’ll play a crucial role in setting their future direction, including design of an open platform to enable integration with voluntary sector and commercial partners. With the ambition to lead in our sector, you’ll have the chance to establish and lead the engineering function, making your mark in a creative and ambitious organisation. As well as an exceptional and ambitious engineer, we’re looking for someone who approaches their work with a strong sense of ownership and commitment and is always learning and encouraging others to do the same.

Specific Duties:
• Support the Digital Director and Product Manager in the ongoing development of the Company’s digital product strategy
• Work collaboratively with a cross-functional team to develop innovative digital products that support and enhance youth volunteering
• Act as in-house expert in web technologies, leading on all aspects of technical strategy and development, including front and back end development, coding standards, architecture and QA
• Lead technical discovery processes to ensure the Company makes the right decisions on procurement and integration with third party systems and builds in-house where appropriate
• Play a key role in setting the future direction for the Company’s digital products, including architecture and development of an open platform to enable integration and reuse by third parties
• Collaborate with the Product Manager, UX practitioners and other stakeholders to ensure that digital products are developed to best practise in user centred design, usability and accessibility
• Support the Digital Director in leading the ongoing adoption of Lean and Agile processes for planning and delivery across a portfolio of products and programmes. Includes facilitation of technical delivery within a Scrum team
• Coach and mentor other members of the development team in support of their personal and professional goals

The Technical Environment
The company has recently brought their software development in house. The current technical estate consists of a collection of Ruby on Rails based applications and an in house API. These systems are packaged with Docker and deployed on Amazon EC2. Source code is hosted on Github and most development currently occurs on Linux machines. While Ruby will be the predominant development environment for the foreseeable future, the team is open minded about the future direction of travel.
