SOCAR Trading (UK) Limited

Customer Relationship Executive - Business Development - North Africa

SOCAR Trading was established in late 2007 as the Geneva-based marketing arm of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). Since then SOCAR Trading has additionally developed a significant presence in the international oil trading markets and in 2015 set up a UK trading operation, SOCAR Trading (UK) Limited, which is now an active participant in the global oil markets.

Objective and responsibilities

The main objective of this role is to assist with the development of SOCAR Trading’s business in North Africa with a particular focus on the region’s natural gas producers and exporters. Working in conjunction with a small team of business development specialists located in London and other SOCAR Trading offices, the Customer Relationship Executive role will require extensive travel and customer contact throughout the region.

Because this role requires customer relationship management at a high level with national oil and gas production entities and local independent companies in the region, a thorough understanding and appreciation of business practices, customs and culture in North Africa is more important than knowledge of the region’s gas markets. After an initial period working in London and other SOCAR Trading offices it is expected that more than 6 months a year will be spent in the region. In the near term, the regional scope of the role will be expanded to include West Africa.

The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Develop and manage customer relationships with natural gas producers and exporters in North Africa and, in time, West Africa,
  • Identify and provide ongoing assessments of business development opportunities in the region to business development specialists in other SOCAR Trading offices,
  • Analysis of regional production data, trade flows, loading programs, supply/demand balances and market pricing data,
  • Perform market analysis and research key markets and development projects for North and West African natural exports,
  • Coordination of daily news and market updates for North and West African natural gas and distribution to other SOCAR Trading offices.

Experience requirements

A strong understanding of the local customs, culture and business practices in North Africa, gained either as a resident/citizen of a North African country or through a period spent working in a North African country as an expatriate, is a key requirement.

Previous experience in an energy trading or financial markets environment is preferred.

Degree: a business, finance or economics related degree is required.

Languages: Verbal and written fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory. In addition, a high degree of verbal and written fluency in French would be an advantage.
