We have an exceptional opportunity for a Head of Finance and Estates on a 6 month fixed term contract basis, working for widely recognised University in central London. The postholder will deliver the financial strategy and manage a portfolio activites, supporting the Head of Finance, Reporting and Analysis across the business model. You will become an integral part of the Estates division, investigating and identifying financial risks, pro-actively resolving issues and delivering a high degree of anaylsis and reporting.

Key duties to include:

* Support the Director of Finance, Reporting and Systems in the delivery of the University's financial strategy and to take the lead on a portfolio of activities.

* The role will line manage and motivate the Estates Finance Team (currently 4 staff).

* Become an integral part of the Estates Division, attending and contributing to Estates Leadership Team meetings and being a full member of the governance boards relating to capital and maintenance project approval

* Work with the Director of Portfolio and Business Services and to deliver budgets, forecast and capital plans for Estates

* Work with the Estates Portfolio Services, leading on all financial aspects and ensuring that financial information is accurate and up to date.

* Work with the relevant Directors to prepare business cases for all major capital projects including the Estates Masterplan and the new campus.

* Provide effective leadership for and management of the Estates Finance Team to ensure that they are delivering accurate, timely management information to the Estates Leadership Team and Central Finance.

* Ensure that the accounting for Capital Projects and the Strategic Maintenance Programme spend is correct and in line with the appropriate accounting standards.

* Drive and deliver continuous customer service improvements to the Estates Division including financial process and reporting improvements and identification, management and reporting of financial risks and issues.

* Review and manage the cashflow forecasts prepared by the PSO and liaise with Financial Accounting to ensure that these are fed into the cashflow forecast.

* Assisting Financial Accounting with preparation of statutory returns with respect to Estates spend.

* Work with Financial Accounting to ensure that major projects are completed in the most efficient way with respect to VAT and Properties (if appropriate).

* Review and management of period end accounting routines including reconciliation of key balance sheet accounts, review of actuals against budget/forecast, the collection of funding from internal and external sponsors of building work and reporting of financial information to Estates Management Committee and ELT.

* Any other duties commensurate with the skills and responsibilities of the post that may be required from time to time by the Director of Finance, Reporting and Systems and the Director, Estates.

* Assisting Financial Accounting with preparation of statutory returns with respect to Estates spend.

* Work with Financial Accounting to ensure that major projects are completed in the most efficient way with respect to VAT and UCL Properties (if appropriate)

Key skills, knowledge and attributes required:

Essential:

* Fully qualified Accountant - ACCA, ACA or CIMA (recognised by the CCAB body)
* Minimum 2:1 Bachelor's degree or equivalent
* Knowledge of UK GAAP, particularly relating to capital projects and long term maintenance spend
* Experience of working in an Estates environment with a major capital programme
* Experience of working identifying and leading on process improvements
* Proven track record of delivering customer service improvements
* Experience in managing financial risks, issues, dependencies across a complex organisation
* Able to clearly communicate the technicalities and accountancy processes to non-financial staff
* Significant experience in capital accounting
* Intermediate to Advanced level Microsoft Excel skills
* Oracle Financial Software knowledge or similar packages
* Able to manage a team of highly qualified Accountants - line management experience essential
* Able to build and maintain excellent working relationships
* Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
* Able to motivate, manage, set objectives and communicate the strategic plan to the team and customers
* Well-motivated, pro-active and takes initiative
* A problem solver with the need to face challenges and resolve issues promptly

Desirable:

* Knowledge of Higher Education and/or charity accounting
* Knowledge of International Accounting Standards
* Previous experience of working in a HE environment
