The Medical Protection Society Limited ("MPS") is the world’s leading protection organisation for doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals. We protect and support the professional interests of more than 300,000 members around the world. Membership provides access to expert advice and support together with the right to request indemnity for any complaints or claims arising from professional practice.
Our in-house experts assist with the wide range of legal and ethical problems that arise from professional practice. This can include clinical negligence claims, complaints, medical and dental council inquiries, legal and ethical dilemmas, disciplinary procedures, inquests and fatal accident inquiries.
Our Communications department has a requirement for a part-time Press Officer on a 12 month fixed term contract based in our London office. This role is part-time, 3 days a week, with the successful candidate able to choose their own work pattern.
As a Press Officer you will work closely with the Media Relations Manager and wider Communications team. You will be responsible for assisting in the handling of media relations for MPS and providing media support and advice to our members, both in the UK and internationally.
Additionally this role will promote MPS by developing media contacts in the trade and national press, handling press enquiries and placing features. You will write and distribute press releases on issues relevant to MPS to ensure we are acknowledged as experts and a leading voice on medico and dentolegal issues
This role will help manage the reputation of MPS and our members; including monitoring coverage, addressing potentially damaging content and planning ahead to avoid issues. Importantly you will be part of an on call rota for out of hours press calls, one week in five.
Candidates will be degree educated, ideally in a relevant subject such as Public Relations, Journalism or English, although these are not a prerequisite and have previous experience of working in a Communications department, preferably within a press office.
You must possess a working knowledge of UK print, broadcast and online media, and how to deal with each of them; and be competent in dealing with reactive press enquires and working with internal experts to provide a response within a deadline.
