Main Purpose
The role is a senior mechanical engineering role within the M&E design team, providing and overseeing mechanical design output the role requires the engineer to be heavily involved with site engineering reviews as well as providing engineering support to sales and project teams.

The main responsibility for the position is to act as the lead mechanical engineer in the design team with responsibility for ensuring that all mechanical designs meet relevant standards and quality measures. As well as overseeing the design output, the role will require a large amount of site reviews to help generate energy conservation measures for a wide variety of project types from local authority, industrial and retail clients, requiring the engineer to be able to adapt to different sites and systems understanding quickly with an ability to highlight opportunities.

The lead mechanical engineer will provide support to other mechanical engineers and work very closely within the design team with other disciplines.

This role ideally suits an engineer whom enjoys a wide variety of engineering, projects types and challenges.

Job Accountabilities
• Attend site with other disciplines tasked to survey engineering systems to identify energy conservation measures (ECM’s)
• Act as company representative to the client, often as lead engineer on site.
• Understand buildings and systems energy use to develop initial survey findings into fully rationalised ECM’s using sound engineering principals (Input to initiative costings and relative energy savings)
• Openly present ideas and findings within the design team and promote innovation and engineering expertise to other disciplines with the team.
• Support Eon sales staff with initial contact with clients through to developed proposals
• Create, issue and check proposals and reports to clients. Fully understand the commercial needs of the business within all proposals ensuring minimum margins.
• Attend client meetings – initial contacts through to presentations of report to during project support and handover.
• Produce full mechanical designs, often from limited information:
• Mechanical loadings, pipe sizing, duct sizing, equipment sizing and selection etc.
• Responsible for mechanical design output and sign off others work.
• Write and develop design specification documents ensuring levels of detail and compliance with latest standards supporting the business design lead tender process.
• Work closely with other design team members and disciplines to ensure fully developed and integrated solutions and designs.
• Issue designs and specifications to approved suppliers and contractors. Managing requests for information and fielding technical queries.
• Assist with tender review process to identify compliant tenders to the design specification and all relevant legislation. Report tender review results and make recommendations to Head of Design, Head of Projects and Head of Procurement.
• Develop existing approved contractor and supplier relationships and help identify new suppliers and contractors.
• Take the lead on all design and energy saving applications and queries
• Assist with planning applications during project design phase.
• Produce design risk assessments and consider health and safety in all design decisions.
• Keep abreast of latest technologies and industry innovations and solutions – helping to steer new initiatives within the business.
• Manage multiple projects at different stages of survey, design and delivery. Supporting workloads and deadlines effectively.
• Recognise the importance of procedures and processes and adhere to these to deliver a high standard of customer service
• Frequently interface and communicate with customers to assist with account development
• Work confidently within a pressurised environment, multi-tasking between the different operational disciplines and projects

Knowledge / Skills / Experience
• Qualifications
Proven experience in an engineering role
Degree qualified
Charted Engineer or working towards (CIBSE, IET etc.)

• Job knowledge
Strong background in mechanical & HVAC engineering
Renewables experience and/or sound understanding
Design experience – Gas, heating, chilled water, equipment sizing, duct sizing etc.
Experience of surveying existing systems and ability to understand systems with limited time on site
Practical site experience an advantage.
Good understanding of HVAC controls and integration
