Essex Legal Services (ELS) is the award winning in-house legal service of Essex County Council, one of the largest local authorities in the country. Its innovative vision has led to ELS being at the forefront of developing shared legal services and proactively disseminating its expertise and experience with a wide range of public bodies.

Based in Chelmsford, we are looking for a caseworker to join our existing appointee and deputy team. As a caseworker you will support Paralegals to provide a professional property and financial affairs deputyship service to vulnerable adults.

You will be expected to:

* To support Paralegals to manage all aspects of a client caseload;
* To have regard to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Code of Practice and to apply the principles of the Act when acting on behalf of a client;
* You will act with due care, skill and diligence, as you would do in making your own decisions and conducting your own affairs;
* You will work with the clients and their network of support to achieve the best quality of life for him or her from their available funds.

Knowledge, skills and experience

* Good general level of education, including English and Mathematics at GCSE grade A-C, or demonstrably equivalent abilities.
* A basic knowledge of the Welfare Benefits system is desirable.
* A basic knowledge of The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is desirable.
* Experience of office administration.
* Experience of formal letter writing.
* Experience of recording clear, precise and accurate notes, decisions and reports.
* Working in a setting with direct customer contact, giving and collecting information
* to/from customers by telephone or in person.
* Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone.
* Working as part of a team.
* Good experience of managing ones own time.
* Experience of making tasks to follow up actions in a timely manner.
* Experience of working in constructive partnerships with other agencies, e.g. AH&CW operational teams, Finance Shared Services, OPG, Department for Work and Pensions, CAB, HM Revenue and Customs.
* Good experience of IT systems including Outlook, Word, Excel and Access.
* Knowledge of Data Protection legislation.
* Knowledge of Freedom of Information legislation.
