The Client

World class automotive business who are currently experiencing rapid growth require a Tooling Engineer to join the business based at the site in Whitley.

The Role

The role of the Tooling Engineer will revolve around the following responsibilities:
• Ensuring machine tool and cutting tool vendors designs meet project requirements
• Develop and refine cutting tool strategies for cutter grinding, tool change and tool float ensure cost, productivity and quality requirements are met and exceeded
• Develop and refine Bills of Process for all areas of influence, such as cutting tool and tool room, to develop global standard operating practices.
• Liaise with tooling suppliers, process engineers and tooling engineers to drive cost per unit and productivity improvements throughout the planning and delivery phases of a project.
• Design and analyse tool float and tool change requirements to identify where improvements could be made to reduce cost and increase production efficiency
• Identify cutting tool design enhancements, and using cost versus benefit analysis, drive cost per unit and productivity improvements for current and future projects
• Manage and control all tooling related documentation and ensuring that the requirements of the company quality standard are adhered to
• Manage and execute the specification, procurement, delivery and commissioning of all tools, equipment and systems required to control of cutting tools within an engine plant.
• Identify the specifications for tool management and setting facilities to meet the project quality, productivity and timing requirements;
• Set the cutting tool standards to be used on all JLR engine programmes worldwide.
• Assist creation of budgets for new programmes, and the management of project costs and spend.

Required Experience

The ideal candidate for the role of Tooling Engineer will ideally have a degree in manufacturing or mechanical engineering. You will have experience of working in a high volume production machining environment. You must be able to demonstrate excellent understanding and experience of cutting tool methodologies. MS Office skills – experienced using Excel, Word and PowerPoint and a working knowledge of SPC and process capability gained in an automotive production context is required.
The role requires the need for international travel, both within Europe and outside, of varying durations, to support the requirements of the business
