Specialist Dietician - Team Leader (Weight Management)


The Lead dietician will provide leadership and operational management and take overall accountability for delivering project outputs and outcomes of the specialist weight management service across Peterborough.
The post holder will be responsible for staffing arrangements and be accountable for the overall performance of the services. The post holder will ensure services are delivered and developed to provide high quality, safe and effective packages of support that respond to the needs of the client and have a positive impact on the wider community in accordance with contractual obligations and the philosophy of Solutions4Health.

Our specialist service takes a psychological approach to weight management, including behavioural change, dietary advice and guidance on physical activity. The post holder will work within a multi-disciplinary team (community/primary care) to develop and deliver S4H programmes on weight management in Peterborough. This will be in a clinical, public education and partnership building capacity across the weight management referral pathway, covering specifically Tiers 1- 2- 3, and with onward referral to Tier 4 as appropriate. The key aims of the weight management service will be to:

- Promote independence and self-management (including self-monitoring);

- Provide enabling strategies for residents, including on-going support once a programme or referral period has ended, (which may include the programme itself, online resources or support groups, other local services or activities, and family or friends);

- Emphasise the importance of maintaining new dietary habits and increased physical activity levels in the long term to prevent weight re-gain and communicate strategies to overcome any difficulties in maintaining new behaviours;

- Encourage dietary habits that will support healthy weight maintenance and are sustainable in the long term; and

- Ensure that all referrals are triaged, so that residents receive the most appropriate weight management service according to their needs.


The post holder will be responsible for leading, planning and providing weight management service(s) for children, young people, and adults aged 4 - 74 years in Peterborough. Duties will include the development and delivery of Tier 3 and 2 programmes, across the whole pathway in the community, and in clinic based settings.

The post holder will establish and maintain a multi-disciplinary, key stakeholder Weight Management Steering Group.

The post holder will develop an operational and implementation plan for the Weight Management Service on an annual basis.

Be responsible for developing new processes regarding: a) the promotion of the service; and b) the implementation of referral protocols with schools, primary care and community services, hospitals, and other local providers and community groups in Peterborough.

Be responsible for proactively and reactively obtaining referrals for the Weight Management Service across the City.

Supervise and support, the day-to-day activities of the Weight Management Practitioner (Tier 3/2 Support) in the delivery of the Tier 3/2-weight management programme.

Maintain and review the appropriateness and effectiveness of service standards, for the purpose of achieving continuous improvement, and identifying gaps in provision and staff training.

Develop and maintain key stakeholder relationships and community networks, which may include assisting with the co-ordination and delivery of events to promote the Weight Management Service across Peterborough. Examples of the key relationships associated with the delivery of the Weight Management Service are: local residents, including parents and families; Schools and education providers; GPs, primary care and community services; Acute providers and staff; Public Health; and other Council staff.

To utilise dietetic resources appropriately and effectively (including awareness of cost) e.g. dietary information sheets & dietary products and be responsible for the safe use of equipment used within the service.

Person Specification for
Specialist Dietician - Team Leader (Weight Management)


- Educated to a degree level in Nutrition & Dietetics.
- Registered Dietician (Health & Care Professions Council)
- Demonstrable post-graduate Clinical experience in treating overweight & obese adults
- Experience of using psychological/behavioural management approaches in the clinical management of obesity
- Training and/or teaching of health professionals and community workers, preferably in issues related to obesity/health promotion
- Experience of developing and delivering community/primary care based projects, events and programs.
- Experience of delivering training to other professionals
- Experience in community involvement and engagement
- Practical experience of facilitating change
- Good understanding and knowledge of budget management.
- Experience of managing/supervising staff
- Experience of inter-agency and partnership working
- Practical experience of using IT systems.

- Member of British Dietetic Association and other specialist groups e.g. DOM-UK (Dieticians in Obesity Management in the UK)
- Post graduate Diploma Public Health or equivalent management qualification

- Health promotion/public health experience.
- Worked in health related strategic and policy initiatives which involve and/or impact on public health.
