A Shropshire based ink manufacturer has a vacancy for a development chemist. The role will involve formulating specialised inks; developing and testing them from laboratory scale through to manufacturing. Working as part of a close-knit team, the individual will be responsible for improving existing ink formulations and for developing innovative new ink products. This will involve a combination of wet bench work, physical characterisation, and print-testing in inkjet printers.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in chemistry, or a related subject, combined with hands-on experience of working in a laboratory environment. Experience of developing inkjet inks would be advantageous, but is not essential. Good communication skills are also required as the role will require the successful candidate to liaise directly with both customers and raw material suppliers.

This role requires someone who will take responsibility for driving projects forward, with the support of the management team. Although primarily a technical position, there will be opportunities for the right candidate to contribute to other areas of the business.

Key Responsibilities

- Undertake research and development of novel inks and coatings.
- Formulate, characterise and test inks in the laboratory, and when necessary at customer premises.
- Plan development projects, develop research methods, and implement agreed project plans.
- Design and carry out experiments in accordance with project requirements.
- Carry out lab-based development work from initial formulation/sample preparation through to final testing of inks.
- Liaise with customers and suppliers
- Drive projects forward to meet the needs of the business and its customers.
- Assist with technical requests from customers and with any technical problems in the production department.
- Accurately update records. Write progress reports for presentation to technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Operate inkjet printers, carry out basic maintenance when required.
- Author MSDS and other technical documents.

Skills & Experience Required

- Degree in chemistry, materials science, polymer science or related field.
- Experience of developing inkjet inks or similar fluids would be an advantage.
- Self-motivated as the role will sometimes involve working unsupervised, and taking responsibility for driving projects forward, with the support of the management team.
- Good analytical skills, an ability to interpret results, and make recommendations based on experimental results.
- Ability to organise own workload and work on multiple projects at the same time.
- Good report writing and project-planning skills.
- Proven capabilities in designing and planning experiments, problem solving and developing innovative and creative solutions to technical challenges.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate complex ideas in a straightforward manner and to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels.
- Good colour vision.
